Crystallographic Composition

In 2016 I started a collaborative project with Architects and Crystallographers from Cardiff University to explore creative opportunities within crystallographic data-sets and modelling algorithms. This composition research developed and extended their Leverhulme funded research which had already commenced. Outcomes included music, generative compositions, audio-visual work and an installation in Berlin.

Below you’ll find some of the resulting music, a movie and some images. My paper on the project is published in The International Journal of Creative Media Research, and can be found here. A paper explaining the wider project can be found here.

My part of the research was kindly supported by Arts Council England and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Additional thanks go to the warm welcome we got at Acud Macht Neu in Berlin. Thanks also go to The University of the West of England and Bath Spa University for staging the audiovisual work that resulted from the research.
